The club holds MTB rides on Wednesday evenings, starting from a
variety of locations in the Ayrshire area. Rides usually assemble at
7.15 pm for a 7.30 start and are of around 1 to 1.5 hours in duration.
The pace set will accommodate the slowest in the group - no one gets
left behind. Details of the current week's ride can be found on the
Organised Club Rides section in the Club Forum.
We recommend that every rider carry an 'SOS Kit' on all off-road rides. The kit should include:
at least one spare inner tube; tyre levers; tube patching kit;
frame fitting pump or mini-pump set to your type of valve; mini-tool
for minor adjustments; a whistle; mobile phone with fully charged
battery; identification - preferably with details of any medical

Ladies' Road Rides
Sorry, no ladies' rides this year due to maternity leave!
Despite the best attempts of circumstance
and illness, 14 Walkers Cycling Club members rocked up in Contin for the 4th
Strathpuffer 24 hour MTB race this weekend. With such
a large contingent, the club were able to exchange their services as volunteer
parking marshals for an optimum position for their (rather splendid) pit area –
consisting of two caravans, a campervan and a huge marquee!
With a stormy night forecast, the 3 quad
teams and 2 solos from the club set off in clement weather to tackle the 7 mile
course, which included a daunting 1000ft of climbing, and some very tricky
technical rocky sections.
The riders were very well looked after by
Rhona Quarm, who covered catering duties, and made sure everyone had warm
jackets as they waited in the transition area (something which became very
useful when the storms hit!) As the long
night began, the race had started to settle down, and the Walkers Cycling “A”
Team (David Belding, Peter Forsythe, Martin Kuhn, Alex Craufurd) had settled
into a top 20 position, with the other two quads performing admirably –
especially as only two of their number had competed in a 24 hour event
before. Neil Walker was running
comfortably in the top 3 of the solo class, and the “accidental soloist”,
Russell Newham was still alive and going well.
Conditions became quite wild in the night,
with high winds and driving rain, but everyone knuckled down and got on with
things. Neil succumbed to sickness just
before the half-way point, and was forced to retire, but Russell kept on plugging
away, and in a classic hare-v-tortoise manoeuvre, overtook Neil’s lap total
early in the morning. With rain turning
to heavy snow by 5am, the riders put on extra kit, and tried not to be mesmerised by the
blizzard, especially on the faster descents.
By the time the 24 hours were up, the sun
had come up, and the snow stopped.
Russell Newham had discovered his niche, never losing his motivation
throughout to climb up to 11th place in the solos with 15 laps. Team Belding placed 15th out of 90
teams, Drew Thomson, Julie Nimmo, Russell Mowat and 15 year old Michael
Turnbull 30th (11th mixed
team), and Neil Smith, Fiona Walker, Gavin Young and Gavin Turnbull 57th
(15th mixed team).
All fitness levels are catered for but riders must be over 18 years of age (or under 18 and accompanied by an adult) and be competent cyclists.
Please come dresssed appropriately for the weather conditions and with your bike in good working order. Riders must wear a helmet and be self-sufficient carrying at least one spare tube, tyre levers, inflator, a mobile phone, personal ID (preferably with details of any medical conditions and regular medication) and contact details. Please Note: good lights are required on all evening rides.
It is recommended that riders also carry an emergency light set (front & rear LED), tube patching kit and a mini-tool for minor repairs.
