The club holds MTB rides on Wednesday evenings, starting from a
variety of locations in the Ayrshire area. Rides usually assemble at
7.15 pm for a 7.30 start and are of around 1 to 1.5 hours in duration.
The pace set will accommodate the slowest in the group - no one gets
left behind. Details of the current week's ride can be found on the
Organised Club Rides section in the Club Forum.
We recommend that every rider carry an 'SOS Kit' on all off-road rides. The kit should include:
at least one spare inner tube; tyre levers; tube patching kit;
frame fitting pump or mini-pump set to your type of valve; mini-tool
for minor adjustments; a whistle; mobile phone with fully charged
battery; identification - preferably with details of any medical
conditions and regular medication. (All available to purchase at
Walkers Cycling except the phone and identification)

Scottish Cyclocross Series - Round 7 - Irvine - November 2008
The morning of Sunday
23rd November saw the members of Walkers Cycling up bright and early to mark out the
course for what would be their very first organisation of a round of the
Scottish Cyclocross Series.The course
was held up and over the sand dunes at the BeachPark in Irvine, with howling winds and
ice-like rain accompanying the riders on their laps.First up was the Youth Race, with two Walkers
representatives cutting their teeth on what was to both of them a new
discipline.James Neill and Mikey
Turnbull both braved the skinny tyres, lack of suspension (both boys being into
Downhill Mountainbiking) and less than balmy weather to bring home good
results.James had a race-long ding-dong
with Stuart McClusky of Glenmarnock Wheelers, only to be pipped at the post to
6th place and Mikey rode most of the race on his own (without the
benefit of other riders for shelter from the wind) to finish 7th.
In
the senior race, course organiser, Neil Walker, Walkers CC led for the first
lap, from a surprisedIain Nimmo,
Squadra Porcini (current series leader) but managed to crash on a difficult
corner on lap three (of his own creation!), allowing Nimmo and James
Frazer-Moodie to get ahead of him.Walker held on to the end of the
race, taking the Club’s first Cyclocross podium of the year.In the bunch were Drew Thomson (23rd),
Scott Russell (26th), Steve Lockhart (27th), Gavin Hanna(33rd),
Julie Nimmo(4th W) and Neil Smith (39th), a relatively
new member, making his debut appearance at a ‘cross race. All of the Walkers riders enjoyed racing on
‘home turf’ and all upped their performances, with an exceptional start from
Lockhart, who looked to be closing down on Thomson’s wheel at one point,
unfortunately slowing a little to finish just one place down from Russell.
Neil
would like to thank all the brave and hardy souls from the club who came along
to help and cheer on the sand-coated bedraggled riders. The race could not have happened without
their help and possibly some riders might not have finished without their vocal
support!
All fitness levels are catered for but riders must be over 18 years of age (or under 18 and accompanied by an adult) and be competent cyclists.
Please come dresssed appropriately for the weather conditions and with your bike in good working order. Riders must wear a helmet and be self-sufficient carrying at least one spare tube, tyre levers, inflator, a mobile phone, personal ID (preferably with details of any medical conditions and regular medication) and contact details. Please Note: good lights are required on all evening rides.
It is recommended that riders also carry an emergency light set (front & rear LED), tube patching kit and a mini-tool for minor repairs.
