A date for the Callander

The sun shone on the 1st round of the 2012 Ridley Bikes Scottish Cyclocross Series, creating very un-cyclocross weather conditions! The good weather saw a large turnout, including 15 Walkers Cycling Club Members. The short, but excellent course zig-zagged around the grounds in front of Callander House in Falkirk, with several tough climbs, steep banks, off-camber sections, and a good smattering of mud for good measure.

The racing kicked off with nearly 70 riders in the Primary Schools event, with one of the toughest courses the kids have had to face! Walkers CC fielded two of the youngest riders in the field, Finlay Wheeler, and Finlay Walker (both 6 years old), who both battled round 3 laps (Martin – can you confirm?).

The Veterans/Women/Juniors race had a huge field, Lorna Sloan, Anna Walker, and Fiona Walker raced well, with Anna riding to a best ever result of 5th place.  Lorna notched up a creditable 15th with Fiona coming in at 18th.   Of the 6 club members in the Veterans race, both Stuart McLean and Martin Wheeler looked to be at the sharp end of affairs, but were both just pipped at the post for a top 20 place.  Robert Earp, Jim Goldie, Brian Hunter, Russell Mowatt and Scott Russell all rode strongly.

The lack of rain ensured that the seniors didn’t have to endure a wrecked quagmire of a course this time, which was a welcome change, particularly for Scott Kerr, who managed to avoid mechanical mishap! Keith Johnson rode a strong race to  19th place, whilst Neil Walker was happy with a top 10 finish, with 8th place.

Thanks to Catherine & Charles for their help in the pits!
