Bar Trekking …

The trekking section of Walkers CC had a 30-mile ride around Barcraigs Reservoir, on the Renfrewshire-North Ayrshire boundary, on Saturday.

The group set off from Glengarnock and climbed the 450ft rise to Beith Golf Club before taking a circuitous route via Sergeant Law Road and Threepwood to Howwood.

The return trip went via the cycle track through Lochwinnoch where they stopped for lunch.

This part of Renfrewshire provides some good cycling options by means of the myriad smaller roads and lanes you stumble across. A good map (or even better some local knowledge) is advisable as these country byways are not particularly well signposted. But the lanes are in surprisingly decent condition although John Walker would be pleased to see that some of them have grass growing up the centre. Be careful in winter though as most of the small roads are untreated in frosty and icy weather.

On Sunday, the club’s cyclocrossers got some practice in for the upcoming 2015 season with a skills session around Eglinton Park followed by a recce of the competition course at the Beach Park.

The club will be holding a series of training and practice sessions over the months of August and September in readiness for the forthcoming Cross season. Details of dates and venues will be posted on the club forum.
