Cross in the rain

The non-stop rain on Sunday did nothing to put off a record entry of more than 500 competitors at Strathclyde Park for the third round in the Scottish cyclocross series.

Once again Walkers Cycling Club were well represented. In the over 50s Russell Mowat was top finisher in 17th, despite a puncture requiring regular bike changes. John Walker and Robert Earp were just behind in 25th and 26th.

In the veteran women’s race, Lorna Sloan had another strong ride to place 7th, with Catherine Logan in 14th and Fiona Walker 20th.

In the V40s race, Jim Goldie and Brian McCutcheon had another great midfield tussle, with the latter taking the score to 2-1 by finishing three places ahead of him in 63rd.

In the open race, played out on a mudbath, Neil Walker had a solid start, before establishing himself near the front amid a three-way battle for podium placings. He came close to catching Allan Clark (Velocity 44) on the final lap and just held off a fast finishing Michael Nicholson (Dooleys) to claim third and the joint series lead position.

John McCracken finished 44th while Calum Ridout withdrew with brake problems.
