Pain and gain

Neil Walker achieved another podium place at Mull at the weekend to clinch 2nd overall spot in the Scottish Cyclocross Series.

The Walkers CC rider had impressed in all five rounds up until the final leg at Glengorm Castle on Saturday where he finished third in a time of 1.06.52.

He was just 2 minutes and 33 seconds behind Davie Lines of Falkirk, the runaway series leader.

The Kilmaurs rider has worked hard this season – both cycling and running – to stretch his fitness levels. Consistent results throughout the Raleigh-sponsored series show the extra effort paid off – he finished 10th in the opener at Falkirk, 2nd at Banchory, 3rd at Strathclyde Park, 3rd at Lochgelly and 5th at Irvine beach park.

Normally Neil finishes the year by competing in the annual cyclists v harriers race at Irvine the week before Christmas. He’s won the race on a number of occasions, both on foot and on two wheels. But he is giving Sunday’s race a miss this year – opting to watch his wife and son in track cycling competition at the Emirates Arena, Glasgow.

“This time I will be supporting them for a change,” he said.
