Scott Kerr of Walkers Cycling Club was one of two bikers on the podium at the annual Cyclists v Harriers race in Irvine on Sunday.
The event, on a five-mile course from Marress, was won by last year’s winner and ace cyclocrosser Brian Yates of Carrick Cycling Club.
The two bikers were separated by Billy Richardson of Irvine Running Club (seventh last year) who finished in 29.12, behind Yates on 27.58 and ahead of Kerr on 30.47.
Also racing on wheels for Walkers CC were Russell Mowat and Brian McCutcheon, with dual members Catherine Logan and John McCracken flying the flag for Fullarton and Loudoun respectively. Taking to their heels rather than wheels were Walkers CC members Scott Russell, running for Ayrodynamic Tri club and Paula Wilson, running for Kilmarnock Harriers.
The conditions changed dramatically overnight for Sunday’s race after two days of freezing temperatures but mid-afternoon sunshine. It rained solidly and the temperature rose to 10 degrees, clearing the ice and making for a mudbath out on the moorland circuit.
The Irvine Running Club event has been held every year since 1958 and presents a superb end-of-season spectacle for all sporting fans.
Other club cyclists taking part included: 4. James Edwards, Ayr Burners; 15. Brian McCutcheon, Walkers CC; 19. Chris Johnson (running), Ayr Burners; 22. Neil Kinnaird, Dunlop CC; 23. Alex McAllister, Ayr Roads CC; 31. Russell Mowat, Walkers CC; 36. Scott McKendrick, Fullarton Wheelers; 37. Craig Kerr, Ayr Roads CC; 38. Bobby McGhee, Ayr Roads CC; 44. John McCracken, Loudoun RC; 49. Catherine Logan, Fullarton Wheelers.
Cyclists have largely held sway in what is a fun event with prizes for all participants. Recent winners have been JP Baxter of Ayr Burners and Neil Walker of Walkers CC.
